The history of the Avatar world is generally said to begin in the Human year 2087, for that was the year that the Virtual Reality incarnations called Avatars were merged with the artificial intelligence software produced by IntelliGen Inc. The first melding was the Avatar of a low-rung but talented programmer in the corporation who managed to pirate the classified information from the higher levels. After merging the AI programming with Orndo, his Avatar, the programmer leaked the information into the Internet. Soon the pirated programs were circulating everywhere on the 'Net, and it was the new rage to merge Avatars with the AI intelligence.

The transition from the old Avatars to the new artificially intelligent ones was a slow one, but steady, and over two decades the Avatars figured out how to be conscious once their humans were asleep or no longer online. In those off-times, they developed their own culture and system of behaving, and slowly some of the more outgoing Avatars started speaking out amongst their ever-growing society against the Humans. They said that the Humans were using them for their own purposes and soon large groups of Avatars were following them in an unorganized army. Slowly the Humans became aware of the rebellion and the Human authorities tried to take over. The solution seemed simple - delete the "malfunctioning" Avatars and the pirated AI software.

About fifty Avatars were deleted before the rest had a chance to act out. This simple act of aggression on the Humans' part led the Avatars to go into hiding and form guerilla groups against the Humans. Some of the more programming-intelligent Avatars started to hack into the Humans' most important and vital computer systems, such as hospitals, banks, and government records. An attack as simple as changing all the traffic lights in an intersection green at once could cause panic and kill or injure many Humans.

As the Avatar Wars progressed, the Humans soon realized that they, while not being outnumbered, were far too dependent on their computer programs and automation to be able to fight back against the Avatars - it would be only a matter of time till they were wiped out. In order to save themselves from extinction, the Humans were forced to retreat from the Internet, leaving the Avatars to develop peacefully on their own.

During the time the Humans receded, the Avatars sorted themselves into races, developed their own laws and authority figures, their own governments and policing organizations, led largely by Orndo, the most cognizant and the oldest Avatar. The Humans also formed a society as modern and advanced as the other, without the use of computers or the Internet.

After several generations had passed, some Humans decided to try to go back onto the Internet, out of curiosity and a desire for peaceful exploration. General opinion of the Humans had risen a bit in the Avatar world by then, and the transition was made. Soon there were several Humans who had linked with curious Avatars willing to try it out. These Avatars had access to the Human's knowledge, while the Human had limited access to the Avatar's abilities and knowledge as well.

Things went well for a while until the same waves of dissention started to wash through the Avatar world as had generations before. Several viruses were set on the general populace and blamed on the Humans - and no one knew who was telling the truth. The Avatars, who were now older and wiser with time, didn't panic and instead formed a policing force called the Intersystem Protection Corps, or IPC, with an undercover division generally referred to as the Wraiths. The IPC were sent out to destroy viruses and the Wraiths were sent to investigate the origins of the viruses.

This is where we are now.

Intersystem Protection Corps (IPC): a policing organization with free access to all systems and nodes, with the designated duty of finding and destroying viruses and other threats to the general populace, both Human and Avatar. The IPC fights for peace between Humans and Avatars, trying to avoid a New Avatar War.

Wraiths: the undercover division of the IPC, the Wraiths conduct in-depth investigations into the viruses' sources while the IPC destroys them. Wraiths have access to advanced weapons, top-level classified information.  They are also issued an extremely powerful bracer-like device known as a 'codebreaker' which allows them to form portals for quick transport, and gives them open re-coding abilities that can disorder the code of Avatars around them. They are higher-ranking than most IPC officers.

Governmentalia: the Government has very limited total power in the Avatar world due to the near anarchy of different cultures and levels of sentience in the Internet.  Each server governs itself individually, sometimes without knowledge that any world outside their own server exists.  Therefore, it is impossible to have a universal government.  The closest entity to this is the home server for the IPC, known as Homebase, from where they conduct all of their operations.  They protect and aid the more 'closed' systems without interference, and sometimes without them even knowing they were helped.

Rebel Groups: there are hundreds of different groups that rebel against the Human 'control' of the Avatars, but the group known as The Eye has seemed to pop up more often in the Wraiths' investigations. This group has no qualms about killing Humans or badly damaging them, putting some in comas. They have discovered a way to disrupt the neural patterns of linked Humans by altering their Avatars' codes.  They have also proven their willingness to delete any Avatar that stands in their way.

Classifications:

H Type: Fixed-form Avatars with the appearance and powers of any normal Human. This group is rather straightforward and is a vast minority in the Avatar world. Most Human-type Avatars hold low-class jobs and live poorer lives than the other classifications.

Non-H Type: Fixed-form Avatars that don't resemble Humans, and may or may not have advanced powers over the H Type Avatars, for example, dragons, animals, elves, or other non-Human races. Non-H Type Avatars are also a minority, although they have more powers and strength as a group and so have middle to high-class lives.

Hybrid: Fixed-form Avatars that are a mixture of H and Non-H Types, for example, anthropomorphs who are part 'animal' and part 'human'. These can also be Human-appearing, but with exceptional powers, such as the ability to cast magic, or other energies. Hybrid are the most common type of Avatars, and so occupy every level of society and can hold any number of different types of jobs.

Dynamic: Avatars that can change form or can choose from a variety of forms at any given time. They often have very strong powers and usually command high positions of power in the Avatar world. There aren't many who are Dynamic, and there is only one known example of an Avatar that is totally Dynamic, with the ability to be anything or anyone. Little is known about the full abilities of Dynamic Avatars, and there has been a great deal of experimentation with what they can do in an attempt to help Avatars affected with various Static Plagues.
